2010 Events



Youth Festival 2010 & Vishu-Easter Celebrations


DMA always plays an important role to promote, support and appreciate academic and cultural talents. As part of Vishu – Easter celebrations, DMA conducted a youth festival on April 10th at St. Thomas Orthodox Church Hall. The completion was divided into 3 age categories, 3 to 7, 8 to 12, and 13 to 18 years. Around 200 kids participated in Recitation, Elocution, Essay and Short Story, Painting, Solo Song, Folk Dance, Bharthanatyam. DMA is happy to congratulate Daniel Diaz (3-7 category), Aparna Girish (8-12 category) and Sabari Surendran (13-above category) for achieving the “Kala Prathibha” award for 2010 DMA Youth Festival . Kalashetra Temple of Arts academy sponsored the “Kala Prathibha” awards. Vishu-Easter celebrations was concluded with a visual treat – by hilarious Drama and variety entertainment programs by DMA women’s Forum members. Cine Actress Karthika was the chief guest for the evening entertainment function.


30th Anniversary celebrations & STAR SHOW 2010


DMA celebrated its 30th anniversary on May 7th at Fitzgerald High School Auditorium, Warren. Cine Actress Kaniha (pazhashiraja fame) was the chief guest and inaugurated the function. Mr. Mathew Cheruvil the 30th anniversary celebration committee chairperson presided the meeting; Mr. Thomas Karthanal the founder member went over the DMA journey over the years, and explained how DMA become an integral part of Malayalee community in Metro Detroit. President Mr. Rajesh Nair welcomed the crowd for the celebrations. As part of the celebrations, there was a variety entertainment program by “In Comedy Nagar” team. The team included famous stars and mimicry artists from Kerala including Unda Pakru, Sruthi Lakshmi, Ayappa Baiju, Manoj Guinnes, Ramesh Pisharadi, Kolapulli Leela etc. The Stars did a scintillating performance in front of a capacity crowd. We were fortunate to have lot of sponsors and a good ticket sale for this event raising enough money to carry out few charity events throughout the year. First issue of ‘Dhwani’ DMA news magazine was released by cine artists Kaniha and Karthika.


Onam – Onakazcha - 2010


This year DMA Onam ‘Onakazcha – 2010’ was celebrated on August 21st at Lithuanian Catholic church. This years Onam was celebrated in style with lots of excellent and innovative programs. The program started with the pookalam competition, followed by a one hour non-stop Onam-theme based program called ‘Prayanam’. The Program showcased traditional ‘Thiruvathira’, ‘Mohiniyattam’, ‘Vallam Kali’, ‘floats’, ‘Kathakali’ to name a few. Prayanam concluded with the entry of DMA elephant ‘Kuttisankaran’ and ‘Kuda mattam’. This was followed by traditional onam Sadhya served on banana leavers and non-stop entertainment programs by local artistes. This years DMA Onam was well attended by the malayalees in and around metro Detroit. Around 700 people attended the function; some of them have come all the way from Ohio, Kalamazoo and up north Michigan. The entire committee worked so hard to coordinate this event.


Indoor Games


DMA hosted their indoor games on September 25th at “Kalakshetra, The Temple Of Arts”. The following indoor games were included this year: 56 cards games, 28 cards games, rummy, table tennis and chess. Like in previous years, the participation from youth and adults were very high for the DMA indoor games.


Keralolsavam – 2010


DMA celebrated the birthday of Kerala on Nov6th, 2010 at Lithuanian church Southfield. This year Keralostavam celebrations showcased the Kerala Piravi charithram; a musical drama outlining the story of Parasurama, and the myth behind the formation of god’s Own country – Kerala. The program started with a quiz competition for two age groups. The quiz competition was well received by the parents, and around 40 children participated in the contest. The winners were awarded with cash prizes. Another interesting program of the day was DMA’s annual ‘Malayalee Manga’ competition. Seven young beautiful ladies participated in the contest and faced tough, intelligent questions from prominent judging panel. At the end, Mrs. Sofia Varghese was selected as the DMA Malayalee Manga – 2010. Mrs. Gayathri Varma and Mrs. Divya Haridas took the 2nd and 3rd places respectively. The winners were awarded with cash prizes and gift vouchers from various organizations in and around Metro Detroit. In addition there were mind blowing two hour non-stop performances from DMA artists. The capacity crowd attended the program were served with delicious, authentic Kerala style foods & snacks from DMA Thattukada.


Annual Picnic


DMA Annual Picnic was conducted on June 19th at Boulan Park, Troy. There was tremendous enthusiasm among our members, family and friends who participated in the picnic. The special attraction in the picnic was the “ Thattukada” with hot dosas and omlets served on the spot. There were lot of sports activities conducted during the annual picnic and the winners were awarded with medals & trophies on the spot. Special thanks to Osborne David and Akash Abraham for organizing the event.


Malayalam Class


DMA organized a Malayalam class for the kids during summer this year. Classes were started at two locations; Troy & Novi. There were around 40 students enrolled in the Malayalam class. The Troy class was organized and conducted by DMA Executive member Mr. Surendran Nair, and Novi classes were jointly conducted by Mrs. Jency Shaji’s parents who have come from Kerala for a vacation and by the Women’s forum members. DMA will be continuing the Malayalam classes starting April 2011.


Basket Ball Tournament


DMA’s endeavor to encourage youth was always on priority especially in the area of education, sports, culture and community service. We try to create a platform to groom young kids in these different areas, try to create a competition to showcase their talents and find the best out of it as an encouragement. As part of these efforts, we conducted a BASKETBALL tournament on Nov 20th, 2010 9:00 AM at Roseville Recreation Center 18195 Sycamore St., Roseville. There were 6 teams, and they played 12 games and the winner of the day was 'Team Diesel'. 'Team EFX' end up with the runner's up position after showing some superb performance in the first round & semis. Winner received DMA 2010 Basketball winner trophy and $500 cash award and the second with trophy and $300 cash award.


Christmas Night -2010


DMA’s annual get together and Xmas celebrations are planned on Dec 11th, 2010 at Kalakshetra, The Temple Of Arts, 30687 Grand River Ave, Farmington Hills. It will be a fun filled evening with lot of cultural programs followed by dinner.
